Importance of Music Video - 18 July 2023
Today, Michelle and I did some research on the importance of MVs in the music industry, and how MVs of different song genres have different conventions in order to cater for their specific target audience's needs and maximise marketing.
We came up with a few points to show how MVs are vital when it comes to marketing a song:
MVs can act as a form of advertising method for music industries as it helps "sell music".
In the older times, audiences listen to songs on the radio. As radios have no screens, this tells us that the audience only used their sense of hearing as they listen to the song. A few decades after (1950s) TVs were widely introduced, allowing the audience to use both their sense of hearing and sense of sight to watch and listen to a TV programme, making the experience much more engaging and interesting. Due to this, many music industries have concluded that people might be more interested in listening to a song if both the sense of sight and hearing are involved - leading to industries coming up with MVs (music videos) which shows a short scene or "film" and the song playing as its background. MVs provide a listening experience that is more engaging, which drives people to be more interested in that particular song and the artist themselves, leading to more consumption which will let the company earn more profit.
We have discovered that songs of the pop genre are more widely recognized by people. This is due to the conventions of pop music MVs: easy listening, catchy, easy to understand, does not involve sensitive topics (such as religion). These certain conventions do not violate most of people's beliefs and are widely accepted by different groups of audiences, making the song have a wider audience compared to songs that are more "niche".
The picture on the left is an MV of a popular song "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd, its music video was clearly able to portray the meaning of the song, which makes it easy to understand.
3. MVs can create and reinforce brand identity.
An example of how MVs can create and reinforce brand identity is the album "SOUR" by Olivia Rodrigo. Its album cover and MV mainly uses the color purple and colorful stickers, which allows the audience to identify and recognize Olivia Rodrigo's song easily from other songs due to the repetition of the use of the color purple and stickers.
Conventions of Music Video - 21 July 2023
Today, me and my teammate did some research on the conventions of a music video. We researched on the elements inside an MV, and also the typical conventions of a Pop Music Video as our group decided to create a music video in the pop genre.
What are the elements inside of an MV?
An MV typically consists of the artist lip syncing to the song, actors dancing, props (i.e. buildings, vehicles, can be small things as well). These elements help depict stories that fit a song, however, the artist must ensure that all the elements relate to the meaning of the song to ensure that the audience does not get confused/is able to interpret the meaning correctly.
Below are examples of elements that are used inside an MV:
Hanni (NewJeans member) seen dancing with other band members + extra actors in the 'Super Shy' MV
Bruno Mars seen lip syncing to the song in the Gorilla MV
Jaemin (NCT Dream member) seen with dozens of candy in the 'Candy' MV
Sometimes, the MV does not have to include the presence of the artist/actors themselves, the video can be animated instead.
Here are a few examples of some popular animated MVs:
Metro Boomin, NAV, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Swae Lee - Calling MV
Bowser - Peaches MV
Daft Punk - Something About Us MV
The Weeknd x Ariana Grande - Save Your Tears MV
2. What are the conventions of a Pop Music Video?
As Pop Music is known as "popular music", it is mainstream and general. Due to it having a wide range of audiences, it has to be easily understood by different groups of people. Therefore, the conventions of a Pop Music Video are: catchy, easy to understand, provides easy listening, and avoids controversial topics such as religion, race, etc. (topics that may be offensive).
Here are a few Pop Music MVs that follow a Pop MV's typical conventions:
We can see that the actor is dancing to the song, which has a relation to the lyrics of the song, making it easy to understand.
The tune of the song is catchy as well, making it more suitable as a pop song.
Pharell Williams - Happy MV
This song is included in the easy listening genre, which is fitting for a pop song.
In addition to that, the tune of the song is catchy, making it popular.
Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak, Silk Sonic - Leave The Door Open MV
This song does not include any controversial topics and its lyrics + meaning are kid-friendly, making it able to be listened to by audiences of all age groups.
Katy Perry - Roar MV
Conventions of Digipak - 22 July 2023
Today, I researched about Digipaks. Digipaks are the packaging used for an artist's physical CD, which has a design specially for the artist's album in order to distinguish different artists from each other, and also distinguish their different albums or singles. I learned that the design of the digipak includes designs that relate to the theme of the songs in the album, and it has to contain elements that complement the branding of the artist.
The artists I chose for reference are The Weeknd's "Starboy" and NCT Dream's "Hot Sauce".
As an overview, the conventions of the digipak are as follows:
Picture of the artist/their drawings on the cover
Front Cover: title of the album, picture of the artist/drawings made by the artist
Back Cover: List of songs and their titles, copyright, background photo, credits, record label
Spine: Contains the title of the album and a serial number
CD: mostly has a simplistic design, contains the title of the album sometimes, sometimes can have a very detailed design as well.
Some of them include photocards (pictures of the artists) or booklet of the artist's pictures
Fortunately, I own one of The Weeknd's digipaks, so I am able to look at its physical features first hand. The picture shown on the left is the front cover of the digipak, which features the edited picture of the artist and the title of the album above a red background, which is repetitively used, creating a sense of branding.
The spine contains the artist's name (The Weeknd) and the serial number of the album.
The back cover contains the list of songs and their titles, a barcode, and credits above a red background, the colour red is the branding established.
The inner front cover is the back of a booklet, so it contains credits and copyright logos.
The CD features what seems to be a personally designed graphic design, it also has a simplistic look. The lightning and cross logos establish some sort of branding as it is also used in the inner back cover.
The inner back cover has a similar design to the CD but has a dark background, it helps make the design of the CD stand out and makes it pleasing to the eye so that there are not too many bright colours.
Unlike the previous digipak, this digipak has an outer packaging for its jewel case digipak, the picture on the left is the front cover of the outer packaging which features the title of the album, and also the unique personally made graphic design.
The hot sauce mascot graphic design refers to the branding of this album, as it is repetitively used in other aspects of the digipak, such as the outer back packaging and the CD. The fonts used are also the same for each side of the digipak, which establishes branding as well.
It features the list of the songs in the album and has a design similar to a nutrition facts label, which makes the design of the packaging unique and attractive. It also contains the KOMCA label which tracks credits copyright for songs released in South Korea, a barcode, and logos of the record labels.
The front cover features a picture of one of the band members.
The back cover features the title of the album, the name of the band, credits, barcode and record label logos on a red background, establishing a red branding.
The spine features the name of the artist.
The inner front cover has a pretty simplistic design featuring the name of the album and the artist name. Its background is red, which complements the branding of red.
Contrary to The Weeknd's Starboy CD, this CD's design is more detailed and packed.
The lyric booklet acts as the inner back cover of the digipak and has a simple looking cover without any complex designs in order to make sure the design of the CD stands out.
When the lyric book is taken out, this is the actual inner back cover. Again, it has a simplistic design to make sure the CD stands out, so it only features the artist name on a red background, complementing their branding of red.
Unlike The Weeknd's digipak, this digipak includes pictures of the artists printed in cards for the audience/fans to collect, this makes the fans more keen to buy the digipak while listening to the song digitally to increase revenue.
Short Music Video Practice - 28 July 2023
Today, me and my team practiced on how to record and edit a music video. We chose to record a music video using the song "Normal Girl" by SZA. In this practice, I was casted as the actor so I had to come up with choreography that matches the lyrics as well as practice how to look and act natural in front of the camera.
As I do not have any professional experience on acting, it took me a few retakes in order to get fully used to being in front of the camera and get the right footage. However, we managed to get it done after 3 retakes and here is the result of our practice music video:
The filming process goes like this:
The part of the song that is chosen for the music video practice is not the chorus - it is the introduction of the song. Therefore, it took me a while to memorize these particular lyrics as I normally do not focus on the lyrics on the beginning of any song. However, as we only needed to record a short music video, memorizing these lyrics didn't take an extensive amount of time.
As I mentioned that it took me a while to warm up to the camera's presence, it took me a while to come up with ideas to "lip sync" or "act out" lyrics that cannot be acted out in a literal way and also to look natural in front of the camera, so I had to brainstorm ideas with my teammates on how we could find ways to act out those lyrics without looking too awkward while doing so.
We tried recording the first take. It wasn't too bad, so after a few takes, we were able to get a pretty decent practice music video.
Conventions of Social Media - 1 August 2023
Today, I researched about how artists normally publish content on their social media accounts, so that I could get an impression on how my artist's social media account can be designed later.
I chose some famous artists such as Billie Eilish, Tomorrow X Together and NCT's social media accounts for reference.
Based on our references, these are the conventions for the social media account:
Highlights: featuring the sequel to an artists song releases, videos recorded from tours, or dance videos of the artist.
Follower and Following Count:
Social Media Bios: mentions that said account is the official account of the artist, also containing the link to the latest music video release of the artist.
Blue verified tick next to the artist's username, this indicates that the account is authentic.
Posts: about the artist's concerts/tours, a "coming soon" post for their next release, posts about the artists new release (showing that the new song is out now), posts about nominations, posts about the artist's merchandise, and even comedic pictures to entertain their fans.
We could see that this post is a comedic post as the caption is rather short, and the picture used does not contain any information about her song releases - the picture looked like it is taken for personal use. The aim of this post is to ensure fans keep updated in her life and entertained as well as it forms a connection between the fans and the artist, as the fans relate to the artist due to knowing that the artist is seen to also have "normal lives" like the audience do. Hence, due to the establishment of this bond, many people will like the post, as shown in the high amount of 4 million likes in that particular post. However, posts like this may be used as an indication that the artist is about to release a new song or maybe an album, as the setting of the picture is in a recording studio - this can be seen from the instruments shown in the picture (piano, stereo speakers) and the headphones she was wearing. Being in a recording studio meant that the artist is currently creating a song. Therefore, it is an indication of a new single/album coming soon, these hints may be picked up on by some audiences as well, keeping them entertained and on the lookout.
Billie Eilish posted about her nominations in the Grammy Awards, this makes audiences feel included as their contributions (likes, shares and comments) were able to make Billie Eilish's song a success. It also attracts new audiences as well because the nominations such as record and song of the year meant that her songs are special and remarkable.
She posted a coming soon post including the date in order to inform fans about her upcoming song release, this keeps fans on the lookout for her new release and keeps them excited for her next single.
From their social media profile, we could see that they have a large number of followers and a small number of following, this indicates that the artist is famous. Their bio mentions that it is the artist's official instagram account and the username contains a blue verified tick, these show that the account is authentic. It also contains some highlights about their albums, their tour, and the boyband's solo minitape releases.
This story features the atmosphere of the artists' past concerts, it has a "share your magical moments" title and an interactive button that allows the audiences to react to the story and share their pictures and experiences in the concert, this makes the audience feel included and entertained.
This story shows that one of the members is about to post a new cover, it includes the date and time of the release to keep audiences updated and informed. It also contains the link so that the audiences can take note of the music video and watch it when it releases. In addition to that, the artists' social media also includes frequently used hashtags as seen in the post, this establishes branding in order to distinguish these artists' posts and music from the other artists' creations.
This post features the teaser to the concept trailer, it keeps audiences excited for the concept trailer and informed as well as the date and time of release is mentioned.
This post gives a preview on the merchandise of the artist - the photobook.
This post features the tour of the artist, as well as the date and time of the concert.
Similar to Tomorrow X Together's social media profile, NCT also has a blue verified tick and mentions that it is the official instagram account, so it is authentic. However, it features the release date and time of their upcoming album releases and has links to the music video and website of their new album, which makes the audience access the music video easily.
From my research, I learnt that artists have to establish branding in order to make their music products easily recognisable. Branding can be achieved by an artist by using the same colour scheme, maintaining repetitive use of fonts and symbols, and using similar sceneries.
This can be seen from the research on digipaks that I did above under the digipak section.
In addition to that, I will show another example which can be seen from TXT’s posts which use similar symbols and fonts but just different colours:
