Elissa McBride

Elissa McBride joined the labor movement as a member of the United Auto Workers District 65 in 1989. In 1991, she was recruited to the AFL-CIO Organizing Institute and became a full-time organizer for the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU), where she helped workers to form unions and win first contracts all over the U.S. 

McBride joined AFSCME as the director of the Education and Leadership Training Department in 2001. During her time in the Education department, she led the creation of AFSCME’s Volunteer Member Organizer program, the AFSCME Leadership Academy, and the Faces and Voices training program.

 

She has served as AFSCME’s Secretary-Treasurer since 2017 and was re-elected at the AFSCME Convention in 2020. During her time as Secretary-Treasurer, she launched the AFSCME Secretary-Treasurer Online Resource Center and the Union 411 video series. She sits on the AFL-CIO Executive Council, the AFL-CIO Racial Justice Task Force, and the boards of Jobs with Justice and the National Employment Law Project. She is a member of AFSCME Maryland Local 1072.
