You can begin to protect yourself even before you check in.
Bring your personal fire kit with you.
Locate the fire exits as soon as you arrive.
Know what to do in case of an emergency.
Stay low to the ground if there’s any smoke.
Never use the elevators. Take the stairs instead.
Don’t panic. Keep a cool head and you’ll have a better chance to survive.
There are smoke detectors in all guest rooms, hallways and public areas. Hallways are equipped with fire extinguishers. All of the hotel guest rooms and public areas are equipped with sprinklers, visual alarms for the hearing impaired and audible smoke alarms. The hotel has emergency lighting throughout the building in the event there is a loss of power which is supported by the back-up generator. The hotel has ventilated stairwells. All of the guest rooms have an emergency plan posted and available for all hotel guests. Emergency exits are on every guest floor and all public areas. All alarms are monitored on site. The hotel does have auto recall elevators. The hotel is equipped with a public address system.
If you hear the alarm, you must:
Stop what you are doing immediately.
Leave your room immediately. Take your key and close the door behind you.
Sound the fire alarm if the fire is on your floor and alert your neighbors.
Walk, don’t run to the nearest fire exit. If the hallway is filled with smoke, crouch down below the smoke.
Once you are safely away from the fire, use the nearest phone to call the hotel operator.
You may be the first to detect smoke or fire. If so, call the hotel operator immediately. If you hear the sound of an alarm, shouts in the corridor, a phone call or the sound of fire engines.
Take your hotel key. Roll onto the floor, and stay flat on the floor.
Don’t stand. Smoke and toxic fumes rise, and you could be overcome.
Crawl to the door and feel it with the back of your hand. Don’t open the door if it’s hot or warm to the touch.
Open the door only if there’s no heat on it. Be ready to close it immediately if smoke rushes in.
Proceed to the nearest fire exit.
Don’t take the elevators.
Take the stairs to the ground level. Hold the handrails as you proceed down so you won’t be knocked down by someone behind you.
If you run into smoke or fire at a lower floor, try and get back to your floor and call the operator. If you can’t make it back to your room try to reach another exit.
Hotel Security will secure the building. Mall Security will also secure the dock that connects the Marriott and the mall. Meeting contacts will be notified and advised of the situation and will be instructed what needs to be done. The hotel will attempt to bring in off duty police to assist.
