History of Foreign Conflicts in Kending (Kenting) Area
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_Formosa
During the 38 years (1624-1662) of Dutch’s ruling Taiwan (Formosa) in the 17th century, there were numerous conflicts between Dutch and local Aborigines. Especially the Dutch pacification campaign on Formosa was a series of military actions and diplomatic moves undertaken in 1635 and 1636 by Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Dutch-era Taiwan (Formosa) aimed at subduing aboriginal villages in the southern island. As such, most aboriginal tribes have been very hostile to the foreigners for hundreds years.
March, 1867, American Merchant Ship Rover Incident
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rover_incident
Due to the special location of Kending coastal line, there were many shipwrecks in the area.
The Rover Incident (羅發號事件) occurred on March 12, 1867 when the American merchant ship Rover, en route from Shantou/ China to Yingkou/ China shipwrecked off the coast of south Taiwan, near Kending area. The American sailors were all killed by Taiwanese Aborigines in revenge for earlier killings of Kaolut tribe members by Europeans (Dutch?).
Subsequently, the U.S. military decided to send a military expedition against the tribe members responsible. A United States Navy and marine company landed in Kending area and skirmished with the Paiwan aboriginals until the Americans withdrew without completing their objective of decisively defeating the natives in battle. The event is regarded as a failure in United States Naval history.
