Partnering for Student Success
While most CUSD teachers were working remotely and learning new skills to keep students engaged through technology and distance learning methods, we want to to acknowledge individuals and groups who helped us design, open, and manage day-to-day operations of Special Day Classes, learning pods, and other dedicated on-campus activities during this difficult time.
"CUSD Teammates went above and beyond to create welcoming spaces for students who had challenges with connectivity, who had problems with engaging remotely for whatever reason, who needed assistance because of linguistic diversity or neurodiversity, or who wanted to be on campus with guidance to assist and help them stay engaged academically and socially."

We Are Better Together: Uniting for Student Success
HCSD decided to prioritize returning students to as much in-person education as possible, while still offering options for students (or teachers) who felt more comfortable with a choice of distance learning. The final implementation began with a multi-week measured, sequential approach of having larger and larger groups of students on campus, eventually culminating in all opt-in students -- both elementary and middle school -- on campus in person every day, five days per week, for a full school day.
"This year was a success because everyone came together as a community to support one another through challenging times, and work together all the while keeping students at the forefront of decision making."

Pandemic Recovery Planning Committee
The Pandemic Recovery Planning Committee (PCRC) was largely responsible for the successful creation of the Pandemic Recovery Plan and its addendums that include a FAQ, social contract and staff health and safety manuals. The PRPC worked in an open and share any idea environment that allowed us to collaborate directly and give feedback directly.
"When the global pandemic hit our community in March of 2020, we all knew that we were entering uncharted waters, but we also knew we were going to have to navigate these waters, with or without directions, to the best of our ability. It was going to take a community effort of educators, administrators, parents, doctors, board members and volunteers to work through complex, quick changing information so that we can do the job a school district is here to do: educate our children."

Staff Support Circles and the Wellness Classroom
Due to the challenging nature of what this year has brought with the pandemic, staff deaths, and the polarity of the election, the team held listening circles to help staff members process their thoughts and feelings about these challenges. Restorative practices and circles were the foundation of these resources.
"The PSD Wellness Support Circles provided an ongoing opportunity for staff to gather virtually, seek support and gain connection with colleagues. These circles have become the model for how staff need to care for themselves in order to care for their students."
