What is a Volunteer?

Can I volunteer?
If you are a student between the ages of 13-17 you are welcome to apply to be a teen volunteer.
We want volunteers that are self-motivated, friendly, fun-loving, and interested in working with the public.
JPL is not accepting adult volunteers at this time, however, the Friends of the Jefferson Public Library do welcome adult volunteers. They can be contacted at (504) 455-2665 or friendsjpl@yahoo.com for more information.
Jefferson Parish Library does not accept court-appointed community service volunteers of any age.
How do I get started?
Fill out the teen volunteer application (see below). Don't forget to get your parent/guardian's permission.
Designate on your application the Jefferson Parish Library volunteer location you prefer.
ONLY the following locations take volunteers:
East Bank Regional*
Lakeshore
Metairie
North Kenner
River Ridge
West Bank Regional*
Belle Terre
Westwego
*If applying at East Bank Regional or West Bank Regional, applications must be returned before or on a deadline. Late applications will not be accepted. Please see below for a list of deadlines.
Will I get training?
Yes, depending on the location where you want to volunteer you will either train individually with library staff or attend a mandatory orientation.
Each Regional library location requires all new teen volunteers to attend a mandatory orientation.
What will I be doing?
Volunteers may be asked to complete any number of tasks. These tasks may include, but are not limited to:
Shelving of library materials
Straightening of library materials on the shelf
Assist with children's/teen programs, crafts, summer reading program, Primetime, etc.
Help staff as needed
What else do I need to know before applying?
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of:
Alphabetical and numerical order
Basic use of keyboard and mouse
Basic Internet and website navigation
Ability to:
Show up on time
Understand and follow oral and written directions
Work well with others
Communicate clearly with staff and customers of all ages
Must be able to work independently
When should I apply?
Our smaller library locations usually accept volunteers year-round depending on the library's need. Please contact them directly for more information.
Due to the high volume of applicants, both the East and West Bank Regional libraries require volunteers to submit applications by an assigned deadline for each season. The deadlines are as follows:
East Bank Regional
Spring: January 10th
Summer: May 10th
Fall: September 10th

While we will try our best to accommodate volunteers, we do not guarantee the ability to complete all hours required for school if the applicant does not allow a reasonable amount of time for completion.
There are a limited number of teen volunteer positions available, and submission of an application does not guarantee a position in the program.
