Dr. Breanne Robertson will discuss the history and meaning behind two murals at the University of New Mexico -- Kenneth Adams' Three Peoples and Jesús Guerrero Galván's Unión de las Américas -- and consider their role in fostering an inclusive environment at Zimmerman Library. Since the 1970s, Adams’ mural has elicited organized demonstrations, formal letters of complaint, and broad debate over its portrayal of Native American and Hispanic peoples. Robertson analyzes its troublesome imagery in light of historical motivations and restores its connection to another campus mural, Unión de las Américas by Mexican painter Jesús Guerrero Galván, to deepen our understanding of race, place, and national identity during World War II while also questioning whether such context can reframe perceptions of Adams’ offensive imagery for modern viewers.
Dr. Robertson is an education specialist with the National Archives and Records Administration's Museum Programs Division. Her publications include Investigating Iwo: The Flag Raisings in Myth, Memory and Esprit de Corps (Marine Corps History Division, 2019) and art historical essays on topics including Charles White's Hampton University mural, World War II-era social studies textbooks, and New Deal mural art in the Midwest. She holds a PhD in art history from the University of Maryland, an MA in art history from the University of Texas, and a BA in art history from the University of Missouri.
