"News"
Artist's Statement:
This piece is an installation. Everything in the room is covered in newspaper, including the walls, floor, chair, and projector. A red light shines from the ceiling, dimly illuminating the room, giving a slight eerie feel. On the walls, certain words, images, or headlines are circled in paint to draw attention to them. In the room, a video is being played on repeat including overlapping video and audio from the news. This combination of newspaper, video, audio, and light, gives an overwhelming, claustrophobic feel. The piece is meant to show the feeling the media can give its audience. The news can often bring anxiety, or even fear, to its viewers. Especially today, many find themselves taking in so much information from the media, it can be difficult to find peace. While many stay trapped in their homes, afraid of the outside world, the news brings these horror stories from the outside into our homes. Not only are these stories constantly streaming into our homes, our one place of comfort in a world filled with disease, but much of the information we are being told is not reliable. Shifting through the thousands of articles and stories, it is near impossible to tell truth from lies. When exiting the room, one headline stands out on the door, it states, “The truth has power. The truth will not be threatened. The truth has a voice.”
