Conference Theme - Southeast Asia: Global vs Regional vs Local

The title of the 2019 conference is “Southeast Asia: Global vs Regional vs Local”. Adopting an inclusive and multidisciplinary approach, the conference will examine the global, regional and local forces that shaped and continue to influence the Southeast Asian society in the aim of presenting a multi-faceted approach of the region. Recent political and international events - including democratic (non)transitions, the progress of ASEAN and the impact of changes of United States’ and China’s foreign policies towards the region - will be given due, as well as development in the Southeast Asian scholarship of arts and culture. Research papers in fields such as political science, sociology, economics, history, international relations, religious studies, environment and development studies, public health, linguistics and literature, Diasporas are all welcome.
The organizers encourage submissions of panel proposals or individual presentations on the following sub-themes:
1. Southeast Asian Histories and their constructions
2. Southeast Asian economies in the Regional and Global setting
3. Social Change and Environment Sustainability
4. Democracy and Governance
5. Literature, Film, Media, the Arts and Cultural Studies
6. Education, Language policies and Ethnic communities
7. Taiwan’s New “Southbound Policy” and Southeast Asia’s responses
8. ASEAN: Challenges of a Regional Community
9. Engaging the International Actors: States and NGOs

NOTES
1. Registration: Free.
2. No late abstract or full paper will be accepted after the deadline. Online system will be closed.
3. All presenters and participants should cover their own airfare to Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
4. Even presenting more than one paper, paper presenters will receive max. one honorarium (NT$2000 or US$ 60-65 per presentation, foreign national is subject to 6% of tax).
5. Complementary meals will be provided during the conference.
6. A complementary half-day Kaohsiung tour will be an option.
