WHY / WHAT FOR? Three decades or so after the civil war, the overall situation in Cambodia seems to be much better! Millions of tourists flock to visit the old famous ruins of Angkor Wat. Fabulous hotels, shopping malls, condominiums have sprung up all over, especially in Siem Reap, Kampong Som, other resorts and the capital City of Phnom Penh. Expensive toys and tools, luxury cars can be seen all over the country - I_phones, I_pads, Galaxy phones, and other gadgets...etc. .( for the rich ones ). Highways and well paved roads make commuting between places a lot easier, obviously.
A handful of people have become very, very rich. Many have become multimillionaire. As in other developing countries, many problems come with the emerging economy. The rich are getting richer fast, and the poor are getting buried at the bottom of economic ladder ( barely surviving day to day ). Material things have taken over spiritual and moral values, and subsequently crimes, prostitution, rapes, abuse of power and many other social problems creep in at all social levels, even to the remote places of the country.
The poverty will always be with us, but our team is trying to make a difference in some lives. During each trip we took in the past, we had received requests for help from students and/or their parents ( as we traveled from place to place ). Our team cannot promise anything. All we can do is to ask them to pray, look up to God for a miracle! ( You, the reader, may have heard the calling from God, and may want to respond to some who need help )
Our team can only be a mouth piece for them.
All I can say is, "There are many who will get over the bump or hump of their lives if we give them a little push/help!"
The yearly tuition for a college in Cambodia is on average $500 ( tuition only ). Some cost more than others - and might creep up slowly. See below for minimum living cost break down. Our team is looking at $400 or $500 assistance per student ( just to encourage them to struggle through and keep on trying ) - not to give up on life.
( Note - there are no colleges in the countryside )
The actual cost for a student from the countryside to study in town, in general:
( let me pick some figure/number based on riding a bicycle to school )
BARE MINIMUM NEEDED PER YEAR IS APPROXIMATELY $1,200.00 ( per my estimate ) - breaking down to as follows:
- $25 per month to share a room rental with 3 or 4 other students ( a small bare studio in town runs about $80 to $100 per month ).
- $30 per month for foods ( own cooking - minimum / just to survive and study )
- $100 for class materials...etc.
The total cost to make it through a college per year comes to approximately, SAY, $1200 per year. That's a lot for those in the countryside ( many... just cannot afford this much ).
If you ever lived in Cambodia, you would know that not many people in the countryside can make it to college. They just cannot afford it.
If you can: $400 to $500 per year will make a difference in some of these students' future! Please seek your heart!
( any amount will add up, and will be much appreciated )
I will post the names when I receive enough information from each one of them ( some can write some English, some needs translation ). I will do my best.
Please seek your heart / help them out! ..... . .... [For other ministries we do, click here]
