This category can focus on a few of the topics below
Sports (All sports; national, collegiate, international)
Musicals, Broadways, Ballets, Theater,
Concerts, Conventions (e.g. Comicon)
Sports is a vast topic and can range from high school sports to global events. Here are some key things to consider for sports
Professional Football, Professional Basketball, College Football has 4 quarters and a halftime
College Basketball has 2 halves (women's has four quarters), but both have a halftime
Hockey has 3 periods
Soccer has two halves and a halftime
Baseball has nine innings and Softball has 7 innings
For all of the professional events, and even collegiate, there can be promotional events or entertainment that takes place to entertain fans. Halftime sports typically have 20-30 minutes.
Season Tickets vs Individual Tickets (see benefits of Season Tickets)
Season tickets are often cheaper than if you were to purchase them individually
Offers you the same seat each game giving you a choice of where you would like to sit versus hoping to get good seats each game
Offers you the first chance to purchase playoffs tickets; I knew someone with Golden State Warrior season tickets and they paid $40,000 a year for seats that were only a few rows from the court. They could sell tickets to their games to make up most of the money because the team was popular and winning. Come playoffs, they purchased the tickets and was able to sell a few tickets to cover the entire cost of their tickets and pay for them to attend a game in Toronto and pay for their entire trip.
Most importantly, for the business, selling a high number of season tickets put guaranteed money in their pocket to pay players, staff, and other expenses related to running the team and stadium. Additionally, the more season ticket holders, they more likely that the remaining seats will sell out at games if the team is winning.
Ticket Sales Promotions
Family Night - promote family friendly deals. One kid free with purchase of an adult ticket; tickets are usually higher up or in less desirable areas. Some family night functions get them in early to watch players warm up, meet and greet with several players, tour of facilities, and all you can eat foods (hotdogs, drinks, burgers). Prices are fairly reasonable as the main goal is to attract families who will often spend more during the game on food/drinks and souvenirs. Additionally, the bigger goal is to get new fans at any age.
Veterans Nights (Military) or First Responders - offer discounts to show goodwill to various individuals who help people everyday. It is a great gesture at a small discount.
Luxury Box (Skybox) or Box Seats (Club Seats)
How can we make more money with less? Make things special that only a few select people can have and then treat them well.
Box Seats are often premium seating areas that may offer, but are not limited to, better views or coverage from the elements, cushioned seats, catered services (employees that are specially there to bring you food and beverages that you can order from electronic devices; no more waiting in long line and missing the game). We pay for convenience. In some cases, parking comes with the seating and offers a special entry away from the crowds to enter.
Luxury Boxes are evident in every stadium, but newer stadiums are especially keen towards making them great for entertaining people.
Companies will purchase the boxes for a season which can range from hundreds of thousands of dollars to over a million for the entire season.
These boxes are more like rooms behind glass windows that allow guests to bring up to a certain amount of guests to watch the games. You can have them catered and there is enough room for a buffet line and even private restrooms.
Corporate clients that purchase these boxes use them to entertain their own business clients or to use for company events (celebrations).
Some luxury boxes can accommodate 20 or more people depending on the sport. In other sports, some luxury boxes may be as small as 4-8 people and have its own section, but not an enclosed room. These may mimic the box seats description above.
Halftime or Intermission
Nothing like entertainment or other forms of goodwill like freebies to make the casual fan happy
Having dancers, performers, or singers to entertain fans are a great way to get people to show up even if sports are not there thing. Think about the Super Bowl halftime show and how people may want to see the music performers more than the game itself (Snoop, Dre, and Eminem in LA, Bruno Mars, Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Maroon 5)
Sponsored Promotional Events - bringing in a business to sponsor a giveaway brings in free entertainment and prizes provided by the business (cash, trips, gift cards, merchandise). Always remember, how can I give away someone else's money first.
Transportation and Revenue
How do we make more money? We charge them before they even get in the gates.
Many ticket sales, whether season or individual tickets, will offer the purchase of parking to make your life easier than figuring it out the day of the event.
The closer you get to the arena the crazier parking usually gets and the more expensive it can be; highest I have ever seen was $80 for parking because was right next to the event and there was no parking inside.
Parking can also come at a premium. Special entry that is away from the crowds, closer parking stalls to the stadium entrance, and easier to get in and out of the parking lot faster.
Similar to Disneyland, the closer you are the more you will pay.
Trends are bound to change based on the season or year to year. Similar to restaurants we can shift demand between when customers come to our business whether online or in person.
Executive Club Members - earlier hours for shopping and additional discounts
Independence Day, Labor Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday - special deals to attract customers and move back inventory
Online only specials (online exclusives)
App exclusives (similar to online specials)
Offering substitutes that are similar to popular brands or have similar functions (Name brands vs generics vs other popular brands). You walk into a store to buy a LG refrigerator and but you leave with a Frigidaire refrigerator because of a better deal or because the other was sold out.
