Help for people in crisis, hope for the future.
HCCM is now distributing food to nearly 2,000 people a month. As of September 2017, we are already up 33% from the year before with our end of 2016 seeing a 59% in NEW people served. That is A LOT of people!
As of August 2017, we have increased our food distribution by 71%. This increase does not count the food we are now receiving DAILY from Starbucks and their Feeding America Program. HCCM was one of two local food pantries in Central Texas to be awarded this grant. We kicked off Starbucks Feeding America the last week of August and in our first four weeks, picking up from half of the stores, we have received/distributed over 4,400 pounds of food. This is another BIG WIN for HCCM as well as our partner agencies who are recipients of some of this food like Mobile Loaves & Fishes, Meals on Wheels, Brighter Days Food Pantry and Reveal Resource Center. We are so grateful for these partners in helping those in need with food. With this grant, HCCM also received a refrigerated Sprinter van that not only rescues the end of the day food from Starbucks every night we are now establishing a food delivery program where we get groceries to those who cannot get to us. Wow!
Hill Country Community Ministries now has FOUR Fresh Food Friday locations! Because of the HUGE success of Fresh Food Fridays, Central Texas Food Bank awarded HCCM a $70,000 grant to expand what we are already doing with our mobile food pantry and their ReThink Hunger program. We will be working with the five Platinum Partner agencies as well as the smaller ones to get food to those areas underserved.
If you didn't hear... We kicked off Battle of the Mascots - "Stuff the Truck" this year collecting 267 pairs of brand new athletic shoes and raising over $500 for our biggest EVER Laces for Leander.
And then right after that, Hurricane Harvey hit. HCCM became a resource center for evacuees referred to us by Red Cross and Salvation Army. We helped local shelters. With several AMAZING community leaders, HCCM filled it's 16-foot truck and three trailers with donations. Nearly 60 of us in the community took the donated items and had a work day to areas affected by the hurricane and mass flooding.
Below you will see what Central Texas Food Bank has said about our excellent partnership and why they have invested nearly $200,000 into Hill Country Community Ministries in the past year. We could not be more excited and incredibly grateful for their support as well as our partnering agencies and retail partners.
"In 2016 & 2017 Central Texas Food Bank awarded Hill Country Community Ministries nearly $80,000 in capacity infrastructure grants. The capacity grants targeted HCCM's expansion of vehicles to pick-up additional food and refrigeration to safely store nutritious, healthy food. In additional to infrastructure improvements, HCCM was selected to receive nearly $60,000 annually to manage the Food Bank's Starbucks Donation Program. This program rescues food that would have ended up in a landfill from local Starbucks locations. HCCM was also recently awarded $70,000 from the Food Bank as a part of a program that will begin in 2018 to foster collaboration between food pantries and meet the need in Williamson County. The funding will allow HCCM to fund a full-time staff member to work on this initiative and cover program expenses. In the past two years Central Texas Food Bank has awarded over $200,000 to HCCM. The Food Bank appreciates HCCM's dedication to the people they serve and their passion to invest in new programs that will provide healthy food and improved service to those in need."
Hill Country Community Ministries continues its strong client programs in 2017:
I had the honor of serving as Executive Director at HCCM this year. With my second year, I have seen this organization grow our client base by leaps and bounds. But this organization is far more than numbers—it’s a place with a huge heart. I get an insider’s view into the workings of an agency that serves such an important role in the community—providing basic needs for living and restoring hope. The issues that our clients face most often happens in the shadows of secrecy, but the work to solve their problems is also not in the spotlight. The professionals who serve these families are an incredible team whose daily work is to go above and beyond. So this glimpse behind the curtain is, for many, a glimpse into the best and worst of humankind. Serving our community has illuminated a truth for me: Too many families are living in hunger. This year, we have made huge improvements in our response to promote healing for the family. By adding our base of volunteers, we have been able to increase our food pantry program and we have enhanced the sophistication of our new programs and fundraisers. We are the first responder as the crisis of an outcry of hunger begins to unfold, but our work is designed to improve long-term outcomes for children and families as they battle what can be the lifelong impact in their lives. HCCM holds a special place in my heart and the heart of our family. I am honored to have served this organization this year—this organization that serves so many in such a profound way. I am grateful to those of you who have joined me in this effort to make sure that no person falls through the cracks in Travis and Williamson county. To the staff , the partners, the volunteers and the donors: We must continue to create awareness in our community and improve the lives of anyone in crisis. Thank you for all that you do!
With Gratitude, Tiesa Hollaway
In 2016 HCCM filled 4,500 famiy food orders, distributing more than 248 tons of food. That's 413,000 meals!
