This trailer was original bought by my son that was planning to work remotely while driving the RV across the USA. By the time he was ready for the traveling his company was acquired by a second company that didn't allow remote work. So his plan was shelved and the trailer went into storage. He used it a total of 4 times for short trips.
During Covid-19, as a DIY person, I was looking for a new project and I bought the RV from my son. So started this new project. I really wanted to get familiar with RVs, learn to work with them. In the process, I also realized that I could add solar panels and a battery to make it usable independent of shore power. You will be able to see below and on the other pages the improvements that I made to the trailer. In the end after using the trailer twice and not having a truck, I decided that is time to move on to the next project.
There is a long list of improvements that I made on the trailer. Some of the ideas for improvement came from this thread on the forestriverforums.com, where people where talking about things that they changed on their Coachmen Clipper 17FQ. Some things that I did based on the forum suggestion:
Roller Window shades. Easy way to get more privacy and made the trailer darker
Switched the tires from 13" to 14". To create enough clearance for the tire, I had to flip the suspension from under the axle to above. That also created more clearance what prevents damage to the discharge ports.
With the new higher clearance, changed the steps from one step to two steps.
Replaced the AC with a mini split and made a sky light of the opening used by the previous AC unit.
Replace the refrigerator with a 12/24v unit. Add bug screen to the ventilation ports in the back.
Removed the furnace, as the mini split also provides heat. The furnace space is now used by the electric system.
Removed the 12 volt battery and added a 24 volt battery system with:
Step down converter to still have 12 volt
Li-Ion Battery with 4.8 Kwh capacity
Three solar panels with close to 1000 Watts of capacity
Victron MPPT Solar controller to charge the battery.
Victron Grid charger if you want to charge the battery with shore power.
A 1200VA AC inverter to run the mini-split AC system.
A Victron VenusOS to manage all the charging and electrical usage.
Removed the 12v battery charger.
