After much painful deliberation, I've decided to sell my beloved 2006 Honda Insight, nicknamed "The Pod". Why on earth am I selling this car? Good question. I struggle with this decision too.
I bought the car in May of 2006. While I was at the dealership buying the car, I picked up a newspaper that was lying around in the waiting room. In it, there was an article about how Honda had just announced that it would stop making the 2 door/2 seater Honda Insight. I think I got one of the last Insights ever sold in the US. I sensed then that I had something precious. I was right. The Insight has been my beloved car since then.
It was my daily driver from 2006 until April 2014 when I adopted an enormous Newfoundland dog and realized he wouldn't fit in the car. I bought a Nissan Leaf and from then on, used the Leaf as my daily driver. The Insight was driven occasionally, when I had to drive somewhere longer than my Leaf's paltry 80 mile range would accommodate. Eventually, the 100+ lb dog became paralyzed and I had to buy a van with a ramp. OMG. Now I have 3 cars.
During the pandemic, the Insight sat. and sat. and sat. (like the rest of us). I started it to keep the battery charged, and continued to service it. But it just didn't get driven very much. I eventually traded the Leaf for another EV that got much longer range.
Between the long range EV and the van, I just don't need this car anymore. But I really really really love this car, so I've balked at selling it.
But now it's time. Cars don't like to sit. They like to drive. It is my desire to sell it to someone who is worthy of it...who is as obsessive about Insights as I am...who is an Insight fanboy/fangirl (and I will be mercilessly picky about who I sell this car to). If that's you, maybe this is your next car.
Year 2006
Transmission Manual 5-speed
Mileage 107836
Lifetime MPG 67.6
Color Silver
Last Passed Smog 3/2022 (for California, next due at next registration 5/2024)
Maintenance and History The car was purchased in San Leandro CA, has had a single owner, has only been registered in California, and has been meticulously serviced and maintained. It has never been in an accident, and has only minor cosmetic blemishes, mostly from being parked outside.
Recent major repairs include, but are not limited to:
IMA Battery Replaced theĀ IMA battery in September 2018. That battery failed and was replaced under warranty in December 2020 - The original replacement battery had a 3 year warranty. The current battery is no longer under warranty, since its warranty began with the first replacement in 2018, and ended 3 years later, in September 2021.
Replaced timing chain cover and seals (a $3000 repair that fixed an engine leak and a transmission leak)
Replaced the hatchback latch
I have most, if not all of the service records.
I also have a little booklet containing every tank of gas I've ever put into the car and how many miles I drove on the tank, and a calculation of the MPG for every tank of gas.
I have 1 original key and 1 replacement key. The second original key is SOMEWHERE in my house. If I ever find it, I'll send it to you.
There are some minor scuffs, and some rubber parts that are peeling up. There are no dents, and no body damage. Just minor paint scuffs. The black seal paint (not sure what it's called) that is painted around the windows has cracked off in the sun.
The only "modification" I made was to add a handy "Flying Spaghetti Monster" decal to the back. I'm sure this can be removed, but I'll leave it on in case you want it.
Kelley Blue Book lists a price range range of $3100 - $5200 for a car in "Very Good" condition, and $3300 - $5500 for a car in "Excellent" condition. Mine is somewhere in between. It is in excellent mechanical condition (criteria for "Excellent"), but has minor cosmetic blemishes (criteria for "Very Good"). Because I have spent money on costly repairs and have recently replaced the IMA battery, I am asking a minimum of $5200 based only off of the KBB estimate and won't entertain offers of less than this.
The KBB estimate does not include the fact that I recently replaced the IMA battery, which cost $3000. The IMA replacement battery is no longer under warranty. Depending on the level of interest in this vehicle, I may decide to increase my asking price to account for half of the battery replacement cost, or $1500, making the total asking price $6700.
I am also asking you to tell me why you want this car. Yes, this is an audition.
