Before diving into fixes, it helps to understand what might be causing the problem. Here are the most common culprits:
Incorrect Master Password
Wrong Secret Key
Typo in email address
Using the wrong sign-in address (especially for Teams or Business)
Caps lock or keyboard layout errors
Outdated or incompatible app version
Internet connectivity problems
Corrupted app cache or data
Two-factor authentication failure
Start by ensuring you're entering your email, Secret Key, and Master Password correctly. These are case-sensitive and space-sensitive. Typing mistakes are a common issue.
Use a plain text editor to type your Master Password to confirm it’s correct.
Make sure there are no extra spaces before or after your email or Secret Key.
Ensure that your keyboard layout hasn't changed (for example, from US to UK).
If you’re unsure about your Secret Key or account details, refer to your 1Password Emergency Kit, which contains all the necessary login credentials (except your Master Password). If you’ve printed or saved it securely, this is the best way to recover access.
If login fails on one device or browser, try using another. This will help you determine whether the issue is device-specific.
Try logging in from the official 1Password website
Use a different browser
Use the mobile app if desktop login isn’t working, or vice versa
If you remember your Secret Key and email but forgot your Master Password, and you're logged in on another device, you may be able to change your Master Password from within the app.
However, if you're not logged in anywhere and can't remember your Master Password, 1Password cannot recover it for you due to its zero-knowledge architecture. You may need to reset your account, which means deleting all saved data and starting fresh.
A weak or unstable connection may prevent the app from communicating with 1Password’s servers. Make sure you have a working internet connection.
Restart your router if needed
Try switching from Wi-Fi to mobile data or vice versa
Make sure you're using the latest version of 1Password on your device. Older versions may be incompatible with current servers or features.
Visit your device’s app store and check for updates
Reinstall the browser extension if necessary
Corrupted local data or cache can also cause login issues.
On browser:
Clear cache and cookies
Disable conflicting browser extensions
Restart the browser
On mobile or desktop apps:
Try reinstalling the app
Clear local app data if the option exists (this will remove local vaults, so ensure you have your credentials saved)
If you’ve enabled two-factor authentication and it’s not working:
Make sure your device clock is accurate, as time drift can affect one-time codes
Use a backup authentication method if you’ve set one up
If you're locked out and can't access your authenticator app, you may need to contact 1Password support for help recovering your account (only possible if you're part of a family, team, or business plan)
If you've exhausted all troubleshooting options and still can't log in:
Look for a device where you're still signed in. From there, you may be able to recover or change settings.
Contact 1Password support if you have a family or team admin who can help.
If no other options are available and you’ve lost both your Master Password and access to your Secret Key, you will likely need to reset your account.
Store your Emergency Kit securely in a safe place
Don’t rely solely on memory for your Master Password
Use biometric login where possible to reduce daily typing
Enable two-factor authentication and keep a backup method
Keep your apps updated
