Backstory
Thousands of years later, in a dystopia where gender has become boringly homogenized. International conflicts have long since been resolved. In a peace like a slumber, people who have been freed from their lifespan need a pet to satisfy their "longing for transience" and "outlet for desire" at the same time.
To satisfy this demand, On Isle of Ava, an independent city-state floating above the high seas, humanoids called "Harpy" with a lifespan of around 20 years are breeding and modifying their own species. Harpy is the only intelligent creature that can be legally "owned" in this world.
Harpy's intelligence is almost equal to that of humans, and capable of communicating in an expressive manner. Its humanoid form is the result of deliberate convergent evolution, thus its DNA is free of any borrowings from mammals.
