With winter approaching, the DPW will soon begin removing cones and frame signs from our neighborhood. If you’d like to keep your cone, please bring it inside before crews come through — otherwise, they’ll take it. The signs attached to telephone poles will remain.
Since I’ve got your attention, here are a few quick updates about what’s happening at 200 Trapelo Rd. The site will remain active over the next couple of years, though most of the work will be deeper into the property and along the Waverly Oaks Rd side:
The Withington and Farrell buildings are scheduled to be torn down over the next year.
The Howe and Administration buildings will be refurbished for use by the Recreation Department. A historical display and exhibit commemorating the Fernald property and its residents will be included in planning.
Funding for the next recreation phases — including the outdoor theater/arts area and athletic fields — was before the City Council last night and will continue to be discussed.
Project planning funds were approved to relocate the DPW to the Waverly Oaks Rd side of the property. This is the first step toward the larger project to build new public safety headquarters at 155 Lexington St.
There’s ongoing discussion about building a new hockey rink behind the Lawrence School and deciding the future of the school building itself, since the state won’t grant Waltham a long-term lease for the current rink on Totten Pond Rd.
The MWRA continues planning the 40-year tunnel project beneath Waltham. A shaft will eventually be built on state-owned land near Waverly Oaks Rd. It’ll be visible from the road but small and unobtrusive.
