About the School of Basic Sciences, Humanities & Management
The School of Basic Sciences, Humanities & Management (SBHM) at Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal, a constituent institute of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), is a multidisciplinary school that brings together faculty expertise across Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Humanities, and Management. Established through the integration of foundational science and management disciplines, the School provides a rich academic ecosystem that promotes interdisciplinary teaching, research, and innovation, preparing graduates for diverse academic, research, and professional pathways.
The School offers a globally aligned curriculum reinforced by experiential learning, international collaborations, and access to state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. A wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, integrated, and doctoral programs are supported by experienced faculty, advanced infrastructure, and focused research groups addressing theoretical advancements and real-world applications. Faculty and students actively contribute to knowledge creation through funded research projects, high-impact publications in reputed journals, patent filings, and interdisciplinary collaborations across emerging domains.
The School hosts a vibrant doctoral research programme (Ph.D.) that emphasizes interdisciplinary research, advanced coursework, rigorous methodology, and high-impact scholarly outcomes, contributing to both national and international research ecosystems.
Postgraduate and doctoral graduates from the School in the domains of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Humanities, and Management are equipped to pursue careers across academia, research institutions, high-technology industries, government laboratories, policy and analytics organizations, and emerging interdisciplinary sectors. Graduates have progressed to leading institutions and organizations including IISc–CeNSE, IITs, Oxford Instruments, ALS Global, Donaldson, Tyndall National Institute, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), and others.
The Domain of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics at Manipal Institute of Technology was started in 1957 and provides the students with the mathematical foundation required to analyse all engineering and applied science courses. Apart from this, it also provides the mathematical methods to formulate, analyse, and solve the problems of engineering and management through the higher-level and elective courses. The faculty members help students in acquiring a conceptual understanding of the nature and structure of mathematics, its processes, and applications.
The domain caters to undergraduate courses through regular and elective subjects, PG courses like M.Sc., M.Tech., MCA, as well as pure and applied mathematics in the other constituent institutions of Manipal Academy of Higher Education.
The following programs are provided under this domain:
B. Tech. (Mathematics and Computing)
M.Sc. - Applied Mathematics and Computing.

About CARAMS, MAHE
Centre for Advanced Research in Applied Mathematics & Statistics (CARAMS, MAHE) was established in September 2018 at MAHE with the objectives of fostering advanced research and training in the area of Mathematics, Statistics, and their applications. It facilitates bridging the gap between Mathematicians/Statisticians and Applied Mathematicians working in the area of Health, Technology, and Social Sciences.
CARAMS consists of several chapters working in different dimensions of Pure and Applied Mathematics. Adjunct faculties of MAHE are associated with CARAMS in promoting research and acting as mentors for CARAMS. Along with the activities promoting research in Mathematics and Statistics, the centre aims to offer advanced courses in the subjects of interest. CARAMS offers positions of JRF, PDF, and visiting scientists to work in the area of CARAMS' research interests. MAHE faculty, adjunct faculty associated with MAHE, and the mentors associated with CARAMS are available as advisors for the conduct of research in the area of focus.
CARAMS organizes national and international workshops and conferences in the focus area, which help the promotion of Mathematics and Statistics in the university and also in the region. CARAMS will organize a series of lectures in pure and Applied Mathematics, which are popular in nature, to develop several teams with members from different branches of science and to develop multidisciplinary projects.
