In this final lab teachers learned about the history of deaf black people, Isaac Woodard, and brainstormed which lessons they would do, and what student work to submit.
Thanks to the suggestion of the hard of hearing teacher in the group, teachers learned about the history of deaf Black people and Black ASL. We discussed double marginalization experienced by Black people with disabilities. Teachers also learned about "Silent Hairston" a deaf Black boxer and the history of discrimination of Black people at Gallaudet University.
The second part of this lab included a focus on Isaac Woodard, a Black veteran described in Nikole Hannah-Jones "Democracy." Isaac Woodard was a Black man that was blinded by a police officer shortly after returning home from World War 2. We discussed how to teach about his life, the activism that came after, and the missing Black stories, perspectives, and voices in current curriculum available.
