January 15th 2023: Amphibian Red List Workshop - PRE-REGISTERED WORKSHOP
Join us prior to the Conference for a preliminary workshop on Red List updates for amphibian species from the southern African region.
Southern Africa’s frogs were last assessed between 2010 and 2015. Since the previous assessments we now have 14 species that are Data Deficient (DD) or Not Evaluated and discussion of assessments for these will also be included, especially in light of recent research showing that 50% of DD are likely to be threatened. As part of both National Red List processes and the next Global Amphibian Assessment (3), the Regional IUCN Amphibian Specialist Group will be leading the re-assessments for all species that occur in the region during 2023 and 2024. To prepare for this undertaking, we will hold a one-day preliminary workshop to inform interested herpetologists on these processes, including:
a brief review of how to apply the Red List criteria and changes introduced by the IUCN since the last amphibian assessments
identifying species of concern, and threats for consideration, including climate change
introduction of the new approaches to incorporating climate change into Red List assessments and discussion around the required life history information needed to formally include climate change as a future or present threat
Please send an RSVP to josh at joshuaw@ewt.org.za

You are invited to attend and participate in a workshop on the trade in South African reptiles and amphibians. South Africa is home to a wide diversity of reptile and amphibian species, many of which are popular in international trade. Discussion topics for this workshop:
General reptile trade issues or concerns
Disclosure of reptile and amphibian study/recce sites and locations
Sharing of information on social media
Non-detrimental removal of wild specimens
