Markus Henk is the visionary behind Studio Henk in Belgrade, celebrated for an interior design approach he terms "Functional Minimalism, Rooted in Texture."
Henk masterfully fuses the disciplined elegance of Nordic design—prioritizing light and utility—with the rich, historical context of Belgrade's urban landscape. His philosophy is to create environments that are timeless, not trendy, focusing on the integrity of natural materials, bespoke craftsmanship, and spatial restraint.
He believes design should "whisper, inviting presence and promoting calm," ensuring that every residential, commercial, or hospitality space is built for decades of enduring tranquility.
How do you balance "minimalism" with the need for comfort and warmth?
We practice Contextual Minimalism. This is less about empty white rooms and more about intentional choices. We achieve warmth and comfort through the strategic use of texture and natural materials—think untreated oak, linen textiles, brushed metals, and regional stone. By limiting visual clutter, we allow the quality of these materials and the natural light to become the primary sources of atmosphere and tranquility.
What is your approach to sustainability and material sourcing?
Our focus is on longevity and integrity. The most sustainable piece of design is one that does not need to be replaced. We prioritize locally-sourced, durable, and honest materials (such as Serbian oak and stone) whenever possible to reduce transport and support local craftsmanship. We specify finishes with low VOC content and prioritize suppliers who share our commitment to ethical and responsible production.
Are you able to work with clients who are not based in Belgrade?
Absolutely. While our studio is rooted in Belgrade, our design process is structured to serve a global clientele. The initial concept development, 3D visualization, and material sourcing typically happen remotely. We conduct key on-site visits during the surveying and construction phases, collaborating effectively with local architects and contractors wherever the project is located.
How do you ensure joinery and custom pieces meet your quality standards?
Our designs are often defined by highly detailed, bespoke joinery. We work exclusively with a small network of trusted, master craftspeople, primarily in Serbia, who share our precision standards. Every custom element, from built-in shelving to kitchen units, undergoes rigorous quality checks by the studio team before and during installation to ensure it aligns perfectly with the architectural plans and material specification.
What is the timeline and financial commitment for a Studio Henk project?
The timeline is highly variable depending on the project's scale, but quality takes time. A comprehensive residential renovation typically spans 12–18 months from concept initiation to final installation. Financially, we work on a fixed-fee structure determined by the scope of architectural and interior design services required, plus the budget allocated for materials and construction, which is detailed transparently in the initial proposal.
