Designer Commentary 

"Surprisingly, Guillermo was not even supposed to be Guillermo. I had always wanted to design one of the male characters of Karayom ng Kalayaan, so my initial plan was to design either Havier or Eduardo. Because of this, my initial studies (See Fig. 1) leaned more towards sassier poses or bulkier builds. Eventually, I finally settled on designing the previously nameless Mr. Fring.

Initially, I looked at pictures of ilustrados since a lot of famous national heroes such as Jose Rizal were considered one. However, ilustrados appeared to usually wear suits and tophats, which didn't suit the vision I had of Guillermo in mind. Since Guillermo was Filipino and wasn't of a high social class like the other male characters, I instead drew him in a Barong Tagalog (See Fig. 2), which was commonly worn by lower social classes to differentiate Filipinos from the Spanish. 

As for his hair and face, I took inspiration from various photographs of Filipino men during the Spanish colonial era (See Fig. 2). Overall, Guillermo was designed to seem meek and harmless to contrast his wife's stronger personality and challenge the norms of gender stereotypes."
