Jeeves explains that he is to be introduced  as the valet of Gussie Fink-Nottle because Gussie, his prison sentence having been turned into a fine by the magistrate, is impersonating Bertie. Jeeves took him to Deverill Hall because both Aunt Agatha and Madeline Bassett expect Bertie to be there and his absence would have aroused suspicion. He also tells Bertie that Catsmeat is greatly relieved on learning that Gertrude truly loves him. The problem of Esmond Haddock's dependence on his aunts however still remains, and Jeeves suggests that achieving success in performing at the upcoming concert would bolster Esmond's self-confidence. To sort things out between Gussie and Bertie a meeting is  set up at the post office.
