At the day of the concert Bertie finds himself at the Deverill village Hall, filled with onlookers, amongst whom Gertrude Winkworth, witnessing the opening of the festivities by vicar Sidney Pirbright who mainly complains about the state the church organ is in, followed by a couple of local acts leading up to the Pat and Mike sketch by Catsmeat and Gussie which goes horribly wrong, until a voice from the audience starts yelling "We Want Haddock!", soon to be joined by the rest of the crowd. The hunting song by Esmond Haddock is a resounding success and Bertie is well pleased with this state of affairs until he suddenly realizes to his horror that he has cannot recall the words of the Christopher Robin poems he is to recite after the intermission.
