On arriving at the Deverill station from Wimbledon Bertie meets first his cousin Thos and then Corky, both of whom are critical of his disheveled look. Corky tells him that Thos was brought to the vicarage by Jeeves and also tells him that Catsmeat is happy to have received a letter from Gertrude saying that she will elope with him. Bertie in turn informs Corky about what happened at Wimbledon, expressing his fear that Madeline Bassett will be on the next train, but Corky assures him that she will not, because Catsmeat has explained to her that Bertie is still in love with her and could not bear to see her with Gussie. After having given a penny to Bertie and urging him not to spend it all at once Thos jumps in the car with Corky and they drive off together.
