Bertie explains that he came by to give her the latest about Gussie. Madelin is touched to see him and tells him a story about a lover who returned after a long voyage and, unrecognized, took a rose from the table of his loved one to remember her by and then was shot because he was taken for a burglar. She also tells him that Hilda suffers from a broken heart after her engagement broke off over a game of tennis. Just then Hilda returns, all joyful because she had a letter from her boy friend Harold who wants to make up. She tells Madelin that there is someone outside in a car who wants to talk to her, and left alone with Hilda she tells Bertie that she will do her best to get Madelin to marry him instead of Gussie, remembering Bertie from a racket tournament. Bertie goes outside to meet Catsmeat but sees him drive by and out and is forced to return to Deverill the way he came - by train.
