Bertie finds himself in a room with French windows through which he tries to get out of the house but the exit is blocked by a gardener. Looking around he sees a photograph of Madeline and pockets it to later show it to Gussie in the hope of having their relation restored. On the sound of an approaching vacuum cleaner he dives behind a sofa to remain unobserved. Then Hilda comes in with Madeline, who expresses concern about there not being a letter from Gussie. Hilda's dog discovers Bertie behind the sofa and Hilda pulls a gun out of a drawer and aims it at him but Madelin holds her back when she recognizes Bertie and asks Hilda to leave so she can have a private word with him.
