Bertie takes the afternoon train to the Bassett residence in Wimbledon Common in order to intercept the letter Gussie has sent to Madeline and hides in the bushes near the house waiting for the postman. But his intercept is not successful and Bertie is forced to enter the dining room to remove the letter deposited there by the staff. In doing so he is caught in the act by Madeline's school friend Hilda, whereupon Bertie dashes out of the dining room to hide into a room across the hall.
