Catsmeat tells Bertie that he has been successfully communicating with Gertrude by notes sent through Jeeves. Bertie tells him of the problem with Gussie who refuses to send letters to Madeline because he is infatuated with Corky and Catsmeat comes up with a solution: he will compose a letter to Madeline which Bertie will copy and send to her on the pretext of Gussie having sprained his wrist. While Catsmeat leaves to play gin rummy with Queeny Silversmith who has broken off her engagement with constable Dobbs because of his atheist denial of Jonah and the Whale Bertie takes the letter to the post office and runs into Corky.
