Bertie is gently shaken by his arm by Chuffy, who is in the company of Sergeant Voules. He tells Bertie that Voules had alerted him to Bertie's strange behaviour. Despite Bertie's trying to object they carry him to the cottage and up to his bedroom where he is laid in bed. After Voules has left Pauline steps out of the cupboard chest she had been hiding in. Chuffy is flabbergasted on seeing her and accuses her of still being in love with Bertie, whereupon Pauline retorts with the  vehemently outspoken wish to never see Chuffy again because of doubting her integrity. Chuffy leaves.
