Pauline explains that after she had read Chuffy's letter she escaped from the yacht with the help of Jeeves and swam ashore to see Chuffy. In need of dry clothes she broke a window to get into Bertie's house and changed into his pyjamas. Bertie in turn explains that he was only kissing her to encourage Chuffy to propose to her and that his plan was thwarted by her father who now thinks that he is in love with his daughter again. Suddenly there is a knock on the door.
