Jeeves informs Bertie that Pauline's father has become a millionaire which prevents Chuffy from proposing to her because he himself has no means. Mr. Stoker wants Jeeves in his employ to which Chuffy agrees in light of the future estate deal. Bertie floats the idea of using jealousy to encourage Chuffy and proposes to kiss Pauline in plain view of Chuffy, which Jeeves disapproves of. Nevertheless Bertie goes through with his plan and sets the time and stage for an event where he will kiss Pauline outside, but in plain view of the dining room.
