In a colourful albeit somewhat ornate manner Jeeves recounts for the company present, to which is added Lady Chuffnell who laments that it was all her fault, that Sir Roderick has been arrested by Constable Dobson on the grounds of burglary after he saw him breaking a window to get into the cottage's garage in order to get to the petrol he needs to clean his blackened face. On learning this mr. Stoker loses hope of presententing him as a reliable witness in the United States. Meanwhile Sergeant Voules, informed by Dobson of the arrest, is waiting in the library for Chuffy, who is a local Justice of the Peace. After much deliberation Jeeves is asked for a solution. He advises to have Sir Roderick removed from the potty shed and replaced with Bertie, Dobson having been lured away by the scullery maid he is apparently enamored of. Bertie will then be brought before Chuffy and Sir Roderick can take the witness stand in the U.S.A. with a clean face. Stoker agrees, but not after having ben pressured by Bertie to buy the house in return.
