Bertie tells mr. Stoker that he has no intention of marrying Pauline and that she want to marry Chuffy. Stoker will not hear from it and accuses Chuffy of being an impoverished fortune hunter. Pauline tells her father that Chuffy only proposed to her after he offered to buy the house for Sir Roderick Glossop. After his last encounter with Sir Roderick Stoker has abondoned that intention but Bertie tells him of the way Glossop punished Seabury Chuffnell, and this seems to raise Stoker's appreciation of him. It is still not enough for Stoker to go through with the deal. Then Jeeves brings a telegram for mr. Stoker, saying that his inheritance of his brother Geroge's fifty million dollars is contested on the grounds of insanity. Stoker thinks he can counter this by having Sir Roderick testify. Sir Roderick is nowhere to be found, but Jeeves comes in to tell Chuffy that he has been arrested by Constable Dobson and is held in the potting-shed of the burned-down cottage.
