Bertie runs into Chuffy Chuffnell, who is the landlord of Chuffnell Regis, being the owner of the Chuffnell estate. Chuffy agrees to let Bertie have one of the cottages in the village, but cannot go to lunch with him because he has a meeting with Sir Roderic Glossop. When Chuffy inquires about Jeeves Bertie tells him that they have parted. When arriving home later that day he finds that Jeeves has been hired by Chuffy.
