Realizing that his black face will frighten people Bertie hides in the bushes near the main entrance to the Hall. He sees Brinkley coming up. Chuffy opens the door and, Brinkley asking if the Devil is in, notes that he is drunk and kicks him all the way out to the drive. When Chuffy returns to the house Bertie calls out to him and tells him that Brinkley has set fire to the cottage. He also enlightens him on his own situation and asks for a slab of butter so that he can clean his face, But after thinking things through Chuffy refuses and tells Bertie that he should fulfill his wedding obligation to Pauline because, although he himself still loves her, he now sees that he will never get her. He leaves Bertie to his blackened face without buttering him up. Then after Bertie has been digesting this for a while, Jeeves shows up.
