After Stiffy has sent Bartolomew back to his basket the two men climb down from the chest. Sir Watkyn disappears, and Stiffy asks Bertie what induced him to come to Totleigh Towers after having first refused. Bertie explains that he is here to try and heal the rift between Gussie and Madeline and thus preventing her to come after him. Then Stiffy tells him that her uncle bought the black statuette that was on the dinner table from a mr Plank for a fiver, knowing full well it's value, and that she wants Bertie to pinch it and return it to Plank, who could then sell it to Tom Travers for a proper price, all this to teach her uncle a lesson. Bertie starts to object but gives in when Stiffy threatens to tell Madeline about Gussie's pie trip to the kitchen.
