While wondering why he has seen no sign of Emerald Stoker yet Bertie tells Jeeves that all is well with Madeline and Gussie, but Jeeves respectfully contradicts that, saying that it is Gussie who is getting desperate with Madeline because she is forcing him to be a vegetarian. Luckily Jeeves has made arrangements with the cook who will provide Gussie with a steak and kidney pie from the kitchen. After Jeeves has left Gussie comes in, pleasantly surprised by the pie arrangement and telling Bertie that the cook is Emerald Stoker, who lost her monthly allowance at the races and has applied for the job so as not having to come clean with her father about her gambling.
