Spode tells Bertie that he would like to break his neck for what he sees as Bertie's plan to steal Madeline away from Gussie while he himself would like to have her as his own. On the way to the dinner table Bertie meets Sir Watkyn, who is visibly shocked to see him again, and things are not getting better when he tries to make the amber statuette in the middle of the table the centerpiece of the conversation, saying that his Uncle Tom would have liked to have it, upon which Madeline says that her father bought it from a man named Plank, and Stiffy remarks that it must be worth a thousand pounds. The atmosphere not getting any livelier Bertie retires to his room.
