After a night in the Totleigh-in-the-Woods prison cell Bertie is visited by Stiffy, who apologizes for her pinching the statuette resulting in landing him in jail. She wants to take the blame herself but is restrained to do so by Bertie reminding her of the effect it would have on Harold Pinter's reputation. Then constable Oates returns from his rounds and says that Sir Watkyn will not press charges against Bertie, who is therefore free to go. Bertie leaves his cell and is met outside by Jeeves in his car. Jeeves explains that Sir Watkyn wanted him to be his valet and that he has agreed on the condition that Bertie would be set free, adding that his employment at Totleigh would only be temporary. Grateful for his intervention Bertie asks him if he wants something in return, which turns out to be his Alpine Joe hat, apparently coveted by Butterfield. Freed to leave Totleigh Towers without the obligation to tip the butler Bertie regretfully gives up his alpine cap.
