Jeeves tells Madeline that Bertie is a kleptomaniac who cannot help stealing things, and produces the amber statuette he says he found in Bertie's drawer to prove it. Madeline is shocked, and then the door opens to let Spode in, accompanied by Sir Watkyn and Major Plank. They are astonished to see the statuette in her hands and on hearing where it came from. Spode makes his point to Madeline about Bertie wanting to steal it and asks her to marry him, to which she readily agrees. They leave together for the garden for a long talk. Left behind the sofa with Sir Watkyn and Major Plank in the room Bertie can no longer hold in a sneeze from the dust on the floor and surfaces, immediately recognized by Plank as Alpine Joe who tried to swindle him out of the statuette. Sir Watkyn calls for Butterfield to fetch constable Oates to apprehend Bertie.
