Spode comes in, sporting a black eye from his fight with Stinker, and accuses Bertie of planning to steal the statuette because he overheard his call with aunt Dahlia ending with Bertie's agreement to do his best to get the object. Bertie tells him that the call concerned the buying of the object and not to steal it, an explanation which is only half believed by Spode, when Sir Watkyn comes in, shocked by seeing Spode's black eye and even more so on hearing that the perpetrator was his newly proposed vicar. Spode wants to have a word with Emerald who hit him on the head but Bertie tells him that she has eloped with Gussie. This is good news for Spode because it brings Madeline back into circulation, but then Sir Watkyn says he has just come from Madeline who told him that she will marry Bertie. Spode leaves, disappointed. Then Stiffy and her Harold come in.
