The news that Gussie is on his way to the Archbishop of Canterbury to get a special marriage license, dropping Emerald off at Brinkley Court, is welcomed by Sir Watkyn as good news because he never wanted Madeline to marry Gussie anyway. He refills Bertie's glass and is in such a good mood that Stiffy asks him if he will give the vicarage of Totleigh to Harold, to which he wholeheartedly agrees. When Sir Watkyn has left the room Bertie congratulates Stiffy but advises her to get a written confirmation from her uncle. She agrees and goes out to fetch Harold. Then Jeeves comes in, telling Bertie that he is wanted on the telephone.
