Spode tells Bertie that he wants to break Gussie's neck because he saw him kissing Emerald the cook while being engaged to Madeline, enraging Spode the more because he himself loves Madeline. Going out into the garden to warn him of this impending doom he finds Gussie full of admiration for Emerald, not only because she took care of his bite wound but also for providing him with ham sandwiches. He tells Bertie that his feelings for Madeline are over and that he now wants to marry Emerald. Then Bertie is called over by Stinker Pinker and Stiffy who tell him to leave Sir Watkyn alone for a while because of the egg-throwing incident. Returning to Gussie he tells him that Spode is after him and that he had better run away, which he does but then alas runs straight into Spode.
