To the astonishment of Bertie Jeeves introduces himself as Chief Inspector Witherspoon of Scotland Yard, trailing a notorious crook who goes by the name of Alpine Joe. On hearing that Bertie as the supposed criminal tried to make money from mr Plank by selling him the statuette he announces that he will take Bertie away to be confronted with Sir Watkyn Bassett, taking the object with him as evidence. Once out of the house Jeeves informs Bertie that Sir Watkyn has told Stiffy that he actually paid mr Plank a thousand pounds, but made it appear to be only a fiver just to annoy Tom Travers, whereupon Jeeves immediately left to try and prevent Bertie from seeing mr Prank but had to revert to the Scotland Yard ruse because he could not intercept him. Getting back to Totleigh Towers Bertie is confronted by Spode, who wants to search his car on the assumption that he has the statuette with him.
