Aunt Agatha sends Bertie to America to have him prevent Gussie from marrying Ray Denison, a vaudeville actress. Having  located Gussie and Ray, Bertie finds out that Gussie has changed his name to Joe Wilson because Augustus Mannering Phipps is too posh for the American stage, and Ray's father wants Gussie to blend in with the artistic world. Gussie's  mother Julia comes over to check out Ray and in doing so meets her father, whom she used to know in the vaudeville  world before she married her now late husband. They fall into each other's arms again and decide to get married. Bertie sends Aunt Agatha a cable: "Profession overcrowded.
