Bertie informs Jeeves of his plan, which Jeeves does not think highly of: he thinks it would better be replaced by sounding the fire alarm to enable Tuppy to get Angela to safety. Bertie however wants to go through with his own scheme. Having put on his white jacket under the disapproving eye of Jeeves, Bertie meets Aunt Dahlia on his way to the dinner table. She criticises his jacket as well. Aunt Dahlia tells Bertie she is in deep trouble because of losing the money Tom gave her to pay the printer of Mylady's Boudoir at the baccarat table in Cannes, and that she cannot touch him for more because of the state he is in after having received another tax bill. Bertie advises her to appeal to Tom's husbandry feelings by refusing her dinner. After a silent dinner Bertie goes looking for Gussie, who stilll does not know how to approach Madeline Bassett. Bertie coaches him and offers to soften her up beforehand. He asks Madeline out for a stroll.
