On their way to Gussie's prize-giving speech Jeeves tells Bertie that Gussie finally proposed to Madeline. Bertie and Jeeves settle themselves in the auditorium, amongst whom also Aunt Dahlia, her husband Tom and Madeline Basett. After having been introduced by the head master Gussie takes the floor and starts off by telling a Pat and Mike joke, ridiculing the head master and following up by the actual prize giving, in which he succeeds in ridiculing Uncle Tom and Bertie as well. Bertie sneaks out and later hears from Jeeves that Madeline has broken off her engagement with Gussie. Then Tuppy comes in.
