On waking Bertie finds a note shoved under his door by Boko, containing a list of items he could use to tick his uncle off, a number of which go too far in his opinion. In searching for Boko he finds him swimming with Stilton, at a place where Jeeves can be seen fishing nearby. Explaining his predicament with Florence he asks Jeeves to find out whether the servants might know how the break-up of Florence and Boko occurred, thereby possibly escaping the need for a harsh confrontation with his uncle. When Jeeves returns he reports that Boko has kicked Edwin in the pants in the presence of Florence, the result being that she in defense of her little brother severed her relationship with him. As he speaks, Jeeves draws Bertie's attention to Edwin, who is crouching nearby to examine something on the ground.
