At Barribault's Bertie learns that Ginger Winship has come to London to check out a new secretary named Magnolia Glendennon because his fiancée disapproved of his current assistant. Ginger, hardly drinking any more because his fiancée thinks drinking hardens the arteries, tells Bertie that it is she who wants him to take up a political career because she cannot stand losers like Percy Gorringe she was previously engaged to. She has introduced Ginger to a Cabinet Minister by the name of A.B. Filmer and when he hears who Ginger is engaged to Bertie is shocked to once again hear the name of Florence Craye, the daughter of Aunt Agatha. Losing the upcoming by-election would result in Ginger losing Florence, which is why he wants Bertie and Jeeves to canvass for him. Bertie assures him he can rely on them.
